The Manila Mistake: ESEA Heritage Month

Married In 2025

Jawhar & Norihan met on Muzz in December 2024.

A boy from the capital and a girl from a small city 1400 kilometres away (that’s about 870 miles for our US readers).

Worlds apart, united by faith through an app made with marriage in mind.

Jawhar had looked for love before, receiving his fair share of heartbreaks, before deciding that he wanted to do things the right way and pursue a halal relationship. He came across the app and installed it straight away, believing that it would be the key to finding the one written for him.

He found Norihan’s profile almost immediately.

They matched, he sent the first message and they started talking. She later admitted that she’d liked him back because of the cat picture in his profile (take note fellas), but their shared humour and the ease of communication made her stay. He on the other hand, was enthralled.

“I liked how similar our interests were, and of course, her beauty was a big plus”

Incidentally, neither knew that the other lived so far away. He’d assumed she was nearby in Manila, and was hoping to meet up in person early on to get the ball rolling. It wasn’t until much later in the conversation that they finally became aware of the distance.

“Too late, I already fell in love with this lady.“

Interpreting the misunderstanding as a sign that they were meant to find one another, they continued speaking.

Weeks passed, and their conversations only deepened. With time, Jawhar became more and more sure that this was the woman he would marry.

And yet, in his admirable wisdom, he decided to play mysterious and avoided sharing any real details about his life.

Nonetheless, using her frankly impressive detective skills, she managed to track down all of his social media accounts, only to find out that they share the same surname… as if they needed any more signs.

Amused, and perhaps slightly scared, he decided that it was time to take the next step in a halal way. With his mother by his side, he took the trip to her home in Tacurong City to finally meet face to face in April 2025.

With the approval of the parents, they got engaged shortly after, and began planning the wedding from distance.

By August, they were re-united in the neighbouring Koronadal City, but this time, she was in a wedding gown.

On only the second time they had ever met in person, almost 7 months after their first talk, they were pronounced husband and wife, and so began their life as a married couple.

An unlikely story with the happiest of endings. Hundreds of miles apart, but matched and married through Muzz.

Fi Dunya Wa Fil Akhirah, Insha’Allah.
