Alhamdulillah we have almost reached another blessed Ramadan! It’s the most holy month of the year, the gates of hell are shut and the gates of paradise wide open, our good deeds are multiplied and so it’s only fitting we try to increase our Ibadah!

One way we can do this is by learning new Surahs. If, like me, you struggle with this or feel like you have terrible memory- here are some tips to help you out (Disclaimer: I’m not a religious scholar by any means, but these are things I have found to work for me personally, if you have any additional tips or ideas please do email us at [email protected])

Tips for memorising short surahs

1) Set aside some time each day

This may seem like a no brainer, but it’s so easy for the day to pass you by and then you think “oh no, I haven’t got any time to learn a new surah!” This is why it’s so important to be consistent and  set aside a bit of time each day, even if it’s just half an hour to learn a new surah. Be sure to keep it up, you could set an alarm each day to help you remember.

2) Repetition, repetition, repetition

The best way to get something stuck in your head is to keep repeating it. The easiest way to learn a full surah is to learn it by it’s ayahs, line by line.  Try to repeat each  each line three times, and then piecing it together at the end.

Another great way that works for me, is the cover and repeat method (this may remind you of being a child back in primary school). This is where you would look at something, cover it, and try to repeat or write it without looking- honestly, it really does work. I find that writing really helps improve the memory too.

3) Make sure you understand what you’re reading

Make sure to understand and read each ayat in your native language, so it makes sense to you.  A lot of people attempt to memorise the Quran without actually understanding it. It’s so important you understand what you’re reading rather than taking it in passively, it will also help your remember the surah a lot more easily.

4) Listen to the recitals

Make sure you listen to the surah by your favourite reciter over and over, as not only will this help you memorise it easily, it will also help you with your pronunciation!

5) Recite out loud

Scientific studies actually find that you are more likely to remember something when you read it out loud. Therefore it makes sense when learning a surah to read it out loud. This will also help you better with learning the pronunciation, as we often pronounce things a lot differently in our heads compared to when we speak it.

We hope these tips help you with your memorisation! Let us know if you have any other tips and we’ll be sure to share them.
