We’re sure you’ve all heard by now (if not, go follow all our socials immediately!) but Muzz are building a school!
Our goal was always to do things differently, and this project will be no different. We know one of the biggest gripes donors have is around transparency.
We’ve put this piece together to show you the full detailed plan and cost breakdowns - so you know EXACTLY where your donation/zakat is going.

Why did we choose to partner with the READ foundation?
The most important aspect of any charitable initiative that Muzz takes on is accountability and transparency. We believe that the READ Foundation encompasses these values as well. Since inception in 1994, they have achieved inspiring results. Today, READ Foundation has over 390 schools that provide education for 112,000 children and 11,300 orphans from 6850 teachers and support staff.
How will the $100k raised be spent and how long will it fund each child's education once the campaign is complete?
The money raised from the campaign is solely for the construction of the new school building. It will arrange funds for recurring and operating needs of the schools through community participation. The staff salary, facility maintenance and utility expenses of the school shall be met by charging appropriate tuition fees from the affording students.
Orphan students will receive quality education free-of-cost. The educational costs of the orphan students and those receiving a subsidised education shall be met through one-on-one and organisational sponsorships. READ Foundation has successfully been running its schools programme on the same pattern since 1994.
What portion of a donation goes directly to the pot needed to build the school?
The project will not begin till 70% of funds are secured. This is to ensure that once the project starts; it is completed in a timely, cost effective manner. The risk of starting the project before 70% affects the overall construction due to harsh weather conditions and inflation charges that may arise.

How does READ handle admin costs and what do these entail?
READ Foundation has its own Construction Department for the construction of its schools. Experienced supervisors led by a highly qualified and experienced civil engineer execute the construction projects. The current team of the construction department has undertaken construction of buildings for more than 50 schools in the last three years.
Regular monitoring will be an essential part of the project. The monitoring system will be based on a periodic assessment of the progress on the delivery of the specified project results and achievement of the project objectives in accordance with the agreed activity and output indicators. A final report on overall performance of the project, covering both narrative and financial aspects, will be prepared and submitted within two months of the completion of the project funding. Apart from it, RF shall submit an annual progress report on the performance of the project school with respect to the school curriculum, pupil numbers and their academic achievements, teacher professional performance, schools’ financial management and any other reasonable information for at least three years after the end of the Project.
When will the school actually be built?
It is estimated that the proposed construction of the building for the school shall be completed in 15 - 18 months, provided weather conditions and flow of funds remain favourable. The READ Foundation shall start its mobilisation for the implementation of this project within eight weeks of its approval, transfer of the first payment.

Who are the children benefiting from the school?
240 children in Kashmir will be attending the school each year. The gender breakdown is a 50% split between male and females ranging from 4 - 11 years of age.
How many children at the school will be orphans?
There are 15 orphans in the current school in Block B of Dherri Watton.
Is the school entirely run as a non profit? How does it spend it's income?
The school shall always run as not-for-profit educational institution. READ Foundation shall make available all the educational facilities to be accommodated in this school now or in future and at all the times for the underprivileged, poor, and the needy children at low subsidised fees and orphans for free. This school will run on a self-supportive basis and meet its operational expenditure through local resources. READ Foundation will help towards monitoring & evaluation, teacher training and improvement of the learning environment through the construction of a new building and provision of equipment, materials and furniture.
The operating and recurring needs of the school will comprise of staff salaries, provision of free education and related supplies to orphan children, provision of subsidies or concession in tuition fee to poor and underprivileged children, upkeep of facilities, and allied utilities, etc. READ Foundation shall meet the staff salary, facility maintenance and utility component of the school by charging appropriate tuition fees, although subsidised, from the affording students. The orphan students will receive quality education free-of-cost. The educational costs of the orphan students and those receiving a subsidised education shall be met through one-on-one and organisational sponsorships. From 1994 to the present day, READ Foundation has successfully been running its schools programme on the same pattern despite the major setback to the school infrastructure and facilities in the 2005 earthquake.
Is this campaign Zakat eligible?
Yes! The Dherri Watton School Proposal is Zakat applicable and approved by READ Foundation's appointed scholar.

How does the READ Foundation go about finding these children and ensure they stay in school?
The READ Foundation has conceived and finalised this project through active involvement and participation of the relevant stakeholders including school principal and teachers, parents, children, relevant educational planners, supervisors and managers at the tehsil and district levels. The target population, priority problems to be addressed and the broad implementation approach are finalised through consultation with the above stakeholders, which was followed by participatory need assessment of the target school. The project design process also included planning for monitoring and evaluation to ensure coherence and continuity between project design, monitoring of implementation and evaluation of results.
The communities shall have a meaningful role and responsibility in the management, operation and monitoring of the project school through Parent-Teacher Meetings and other periodic activities at the school.
Monitoring and Evaluation
The head office located in Islamabad coordinates with seven programme offices, called Centres for Training & Coordination (CTC). Each CTC is responsible for about 55 schools on average and has a fulltime team of one regional manager, 5 Education & Training Officers, two monitoring & evaluation officers, one school auditor and two project officers besides ancillary staff. READ Foundation has further divided its schools into clusters to bring economy of scale to the monitoring and evaluation functions and improve effectiveness. A cluster usually consists of one secondary or higher secondary school separately for boys and girls and 2-3 primary schools. Each cluster works with the CTC in their locality and the CTCs work with and report to the Department of Education at RF head office.
