But there are always things to be thankful for, even if you don’t realise it. With every trial there are lessons to be learned, blessings to appreciate, and reflections to be made. The fact that you’re sitting here and reading this blog right now is a blessing in itself… Alhumdillallah you have survived a global pandemic, that’s something be happy about!

This Thanksgiving, though it may be hard, lets focus on the things we should be especially thankful for. Here is a list of just a few things that we have compiled together:

1) Modern day technology and science allowing us to develop vaccines!

We are thankful for the fact that we are living in an era where the science and technology is so amazing that we can rapidly develop vaccines to help protect us against corona. Inshallah this will bring an end to this pandemic sooner than could’ve ever been possible before.

We are also thankful to the 2 Muslim scientists who discovered the Pfizer vaccine...who happen to be a couple! Couple goals, am I right? Dr. Türeci and Dr. Sahin are the heroes behind the covid vaccine, which could literally protect humanity against one of the most deadliest viruses, Inshallah.

2) The doctors and nurses who have helped us get through this

Honestly, I think we can all agree that without the bravery and generosity of the doctors putting themselves out there on the front line, there was no way we could’ve gotten through this pandemic.

We are thankful for all the doctors and nurses’ hard work and sacrifices that have helped us get through this pandemic, especially those that had to isolate away from their own families and survive both gruelling hospital shifts and lockdown alone.

3) Your family and friends

We know so many of you have lost loved ones throughout this year, and we are so sorry for that , Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. But losing those we love really does make us thankful for A) the special moments and times we had shared with our loved ones, and B) The family and friends we still have around us, that we can continue to make new, amazing memories with.

If anything, this has taught us to never take anyone for granted, and to not have petty fights with those we love, as life is too short. Alhamdulillah we have heard so many stories where friends and families who had fallen out have reconnected after the pandemic, and that is one thing we can all be thankful for.

After all, forgiveness is one of the most important characteristics of a Muslim:

“The best attribute a believer can have is forgiveness” - Hassan al-Basri

4) Your relationship with God

This year has been hard. There’s no doubt about that. Apart from the obvious deadly virus out there, we’ve also had to deal with losing loved ones, jobs, a lockdown which has led to loneliness and mental health issues for many, and more related issues. These have been trying times for us, but Allah says:

“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, Who, when a museebah (calamity) strikes them, say, “Indeed we belong to Allah , and indeed to Him we will return.” Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided”. (2:155-57)

For many of us, this trial has brought us closer to Allah, and has helped us improve our relationship with Him. This is something so priceless and valuable, and something to certainly be thankful for. Basically, this has been a reality check for us to stop chasing the dunya, as things can completely change with something as tiny as a virus, as Covid 19 has shown us.

5) Video Calls

Lockdown has kept us isolated and apart from our friends, family, and partners for months. But one thing that has been our absolute rock, our saving grace, has to to be video calls. This technology has been amazing during quarantine, it has allowed us to stay connected with our friends and loved ones, so we never really feel alone.

Muzz also introduced video calls into the app during lockdown, allowing you to get to know your match, even if you can’t meet in person. The hunt for love never takes a break, and that’s another thing to be thankful for!

6) Muzz FINALLY letting us send photos and voice notes!

2020 has been a very exciting year for Muzz; we’ve hit over 3 million members, introduced video and voice calling into the apps, updated our ethnicity filters, but I think the one thing everyone has been waiting on for years and is most thankful for, is that you can finally send voice notes and photos in the app! Yes something so small, yet so important when communicating and getting to know your match.

This Thanksgiving it really is the small things that we are thankful for, Alhumdillallah.

"So eat of the lawful and good things which God has provided for you; and be grateful for the bounty of God." (16:115)
