Yusuf and Farieda matched on Muzz in July 2023.

At the time, he lived in Cape town, while she was staying with her parents in a small city nearly 500 miles away.

“If it wasn’t for the Muzz app, there was no way we could have met or crossed paths”

What started with a simple ‘Salaam’ turned into an exchange of voice notes that lasted deep into the night. The conversation flowed naturally and any initial awkwardness was quickly dispelled. Hours passed and the time for bed finally rolled around, so they both reluctantly said their goodnights and eagerly awaited a new day of conversation.

The next morning took all too long to come around, but when Farieda woke up, she was greeted with silence. Hours passed and nothing changed. No messages, no check-ins, as though the night before had never happened.

“I did find it strange because of how well the first day of chatting went, but I am not the type of girl to send a boy a message first”

Little did she know, the usually shy Yusuf was expecting the otherwise bubbly Farieda to reach out to continue the conversation.

The next day, almost a full 24 hours after their first conversation, Yusuf overcame his nerves and opened with his usual charm.

“Salaam Farieda. So you’re just going to make me fall in love with your voice and never speak to me again?”

A bold play after a full day of silence, but feeling that he was special, Farieda gently let him know that it was on him to make the first move. From then on, he did exactly that.

After precisely 66 messages exchanged on Muzz, he decided to try for her phone number.

Rather than asking directly, she let slip that her contact details were tagged on all of her work accounts, so he jokingly suggested that she send him an email.

“I gave a cheeky reply saying that if he wanted my number, he could have just asked for it.”

They continued to talk for hours on end over the phone, day after day, not knowing how they would overcome the distance or when they would be able to finally meet face to face.

But what is written for you will always reach you.

As fate would have it, Farieda landed two job interviews in Cape Town the following month. So they made plans to meet at her aunt’s house when she flew in.

August rolled around and the day of the big introduction was all set, until Yusuf’s car refused to start…

Fearing the worst, he interpreted this as a sign that it was not meant to be and decided to cancel.

They then spent the rest of the weekend apart, exchanging just a few messages.

Disappointed by his lack of effort and expecting the spark to fizzle out, Farieda focused all of her attention on preparing for the interview the next day.

To her surprise, the next morning she awoke to a message saying:

‘Salaam Farieda. I know you probably don’t want to hear from me, but I want to wish you all the best for your interview today”

Relieved by his willingness to keep trying, she shook off the initial disappointment and took on the rest of the day with renewed energy, smashing the interview and reporting back to him with all the details when she finished.

“He asked me if I was going straight back to my aunt’s house after my interview. When I said yes and asked why, he simply said because he would like to visit me at 1pm that afternoon.”

Confused, given that his lunch break would be too short to make the trip across the city to her aunt’s house and spend any meaningful time together, she tentatively accepted.

Little did she know that he had taken a half-day off to ensure that he was able to see her before she left. The last of his annual leave for the entire year.

They were only able to spend three hours together before she had to leave for the airport, but that small gesture, in spite of all the chaos that preceded it, represented a pivotal moment in their lives.

They continued to talk every day until finally, after a month of waiting, she received not just one, but both job offers.

“When we think back to it now, Allah was opening doors for me to make my way to my husband.”

And so the stage was set for the beginning of their life together.

Farieda made plans to move in with her aunt in Cape Town, and things progressed quickly. In April, the two of them drove the 8 hours to meet her parents and ask for her hand, to which they happily agreed.

“We knew early on that we would get married. It didn’t deter him that I’m 3 years older. When I used to bring it up he would always say: it’s Sunnah to marry an older woman”

The very next weekend, he proposed with a gold ring while overlooking the ocean, and within days they were finalising plans for the wedding.

“We have grown to love each other with all of our quirks and I wouldn’t choose anyone else to spend my life with. Shukran for providing Yusuf and I with a way to find each other. I found my person and my better half with Muzz and am so excited for him to be my husband.”

They held their Nikah on the 26th July 2025.
