The Manila Mistake: ESEA Heritage Month
Jawhar & Norihan met on Muzz in December 2024. A boy from the capital and a girl from a small city 1400 kilometres away (that’s about 870 miles for our US readers). Worlds apart, united by...
Timing is everything.
Aminah and Khalil both downloaded the app after having it recommended by friends who had raved about their own success in finding their spouse on the platform.
Sceptical, but figuring it couldn’t hurt, they gave it a go.
Aminah: “I decided to download the app, and on the very first night, I came across his profile,”
Intrigued by their similarities, she liked his profile and they matched almost immediately, but didn’t exchange any messages.
The next morning, feeling pessimistic, Aminah woke up and decided that she wasn’t entirely comfortable looking for love online. She opened it once more to deactivate her profile when fortunately, fate intervened, with Khalil choosing that exact moment to reach out.
He too had found the prospect overwhelming at first, but seeing her for the first time changed his perspective completely. What had started as a thoughtless curiosity to appease the insistence of his friends, turned into something else entirely.
“From the very first moment I saw her, I felt something special”
The conversation began, and she was immediately impressed by his kindness and honesty. Before long, they’d exchanged phone numbers and had a few chats, but over time the conversation fizzled out.
They lost touch for a while, before Khalil came across her page on Instagram, and without second thought, DM’d her asking to go on a date, to which she eagerly agreed.
“The very first time I met him in person, it felt like I’d known him my whole life,”
Their connection was effortless and their conversations flowed naturally. They both knew that they had found the person they wanted to marry.
“She was even more beautiful in real life, and I knew immediately she was the one. She completely enchanted me, and I felt at peace by her side.”
With an unfamiliar certainty, the process began.
Khalil returned to Sweden to tell his family that he’d found the one; a journey filled with anticipation and nervous texts reporting back to Aminah, not knowing how they would react.
Aminah on the other hand had a much easier time, having already told her mum about him after their very first talk, with his future mother-in-law having a dinner invitation at the ready.
Fortunately, the anxiety was misplaced, as both families greeted the idea with open arms, fully supporting them in taking the next steps.
The shared desire to get married ahead of Ramadan made it a swift decision. They quickly pulled all of the necessary strings and held their Nikah just a week before Ramadan started, marking the beginning of a lifetime of spirituality and partnership.
Fi Dunya Wa Fil Akhirah, Insha’Allah.
