Platform Engineer
London, UK (Hybrid)
£60,000 - £80,000 + equity
Passionate about automation, observability, developer experience, and security? We are too!
We’re looking for a skilled engineer, with extensive start-up/scale-up experience, to join our team and enhance our CI/CD pipelines, orchestrate container deployments, and ensure high availability of our services, and our OpenTelemetry-based monitoring pipeline.
You’ll be instrumental in creating tooling to manage our AWS infrastructure, various database technologies including MySQL, DynamoDB, Redis, BigQuery, and Opensearch. Your expertise will help us on a mission to build the most scalable, cost-effective and secure platform in our industry.
This role is ideal for those who relish tackling complex technical challenges at scale. We expect you to have several years of experience with containerisation, modern observability tools like Prometheus, Alertmanager, and Grafana, and developing tools to simplify, automate, and standardise internal processes.
Join us in our quest to maintain a robust, efficient infrastructure and help our backend team thrive in delivering exceptional services.
What we're looking for
- 3+ years tackling hard technical challenges
- Start-up/scale up experience
- Experience with a modern programming language – we’ll teach you Go if you don’t know it already
- Experience with IaC tools like Terraform
- Extensive familiarity with AWS (we primarily use EKS, ECS, Lambda, S3, RDS, Opensearch, Neptune, DynamoDB, SQS, and Eventbridge)
- Experience with microservices and distributed systems
- A solid understanding of different concepts from HTTP to gRPC, OSI layers to containerisation
- Used to building complex services from requirements to shipping
- Willing to learn new skills and really get stuck in
- Bags of common sense with the raw ability and energy to make things happen, a real entrepreneurial spirit
- Seasoned database experience – we use MySQL, DynamoDB, Opensearch and Redis
What you'll accomplish
- Collaborating on building new product features for our members.
- Building highly secure services (we handle sensitive personal data).
- Improving performance with investigative work.
- Troubleshooting problems across distributed systems.
- Understanding and automating away common problems.
- Tackling challenging production issues as part of a supportive on-call team.
- Building internal tools to support your colleagues.
Last year vs Next year
What we’ve been doing in the last year
- Improving team’s visibility into their systems through alerting with Pagerduty and common Grafana dashboards
- Improving the stability, speed, and auditability of our container deployments to EKS, ECS and Lambda
- Isolated per-team testing environments to improve developer experience
- Creating a Kubernetes platform and enabled other teams to migrate to it
- Setup Grafana Tempo to help teams understand how their microservices interact
What we’re looking to do over the next year
- Develop tooling around our SQL database technologies to improve our security and observability postures
- Provide teams more tooling to help them make informed decisions around cost, scaling, and incident management
- Continue building out our Kubernetes platform to improve developer and customer experience
- Improve the integration between our infrastructure across various clouds (primarily AWS, some GCP, some Cloudflare)
