What to do when you’re on your period during Ramadan

August 8, 2022

Ladies, I'm sure we've all experienced the horror of fasting for the whole day, then right before iftar you decide to go to the toilet and find that you’ve gotten a visit from that special monthly visitor…. Yep, your period. I’m sure you all know the pain. And on top of that you can no longer fast, pray and you just feel like you’re missing out on a huge chunk of Ramadan.

But actually, that’s not even the worst part. There is a huge stigma around women being on their periods during Ramadan. It’s hard, we have to eat but we feel so guilty doing so. So many of us sneak around the house trying to eat in secret, so the male members of our family won’t know we’re on our periods.

We are here to say no to this. Periods during ramadan should be normalised… because they are normal. We shouldn't have to sneak around or hide, and we should still be able to make the most of Ramadan even when on our periods. Here are some things you can do to make the most of being on your period during Ramadan:

1) You Can Still Seek Knowledge

Seeking knowledge never stops. And during Ramadan when our efforts are multiplied, we should put extra effort into learning more about our beautiful religion, be it through lectures, classes, or even zoom calls with friends. Being on your period doesn't stop this, you can still do this, you can still learn and gain more knowledge.

2) You can still listen to the Quran

There’s a lot of debate over whether a woman on her period can read the Quran or not. Some scholars say we can't, and that we must be pure when reading, while others say we can as long as we don't touch the book (more specifically the words of the Quran- so we can read on our phones, or wear gloves if reading a physical copy). If you want to be on the safe side, you can still listen to quran recitations and their translations, there is nothing stopping you from reaping the benefits of this holy month, not even your period!

3) You can Still make dua

Even though you can’t perform the main prayers, you can still talk to Allah through your dua, you can do this in whatever condition you’re in. Ramadan is a time were our Duas get answered more than ever, so don’t stop making dua just because you’re on your period

4) You can still do Zikr

Ok so you can’t pray. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still worship and remember Allah. At the times of the daily prayers you can do zikr as a way of remembering Allah. Say ‘Allahu Akbar‘, ‘Alhamdulillah‘, and ‘Subhanallah‘ 33 times each. It’s very calming and reminds you that Allah is the greatest Alhamdulillah.

Periods don’t have to put a stop to your blessings in Ramadan. You can still make the most of it! Just because you’re eating for one week doesn’t make the month any different ❤️
